My paternal Great Great Grandfather Thomas Welsh. Joined up in 1914 with the 9th Bat. South Lancs. After a short spell in France was shipped to Greece to fight the Bulgarians...was there till 1919 with no home leave. Like many others caught Dysentry and ended up on a hospital ship in Malta.
He went back and became acting sergeant and machine gunner. Fought at the second battle of Dorian and despite heavy casualties managed to dodge the bullets and shells. In 1918 while still serving he gets Spanish flu...survives that and is eventually shipped home. He gets married on Christmas eve 1919 and has four children. My dad’s grandmother is the oldest. He died aged 96.
